A recent UNICEF report highlights the alarming reality that nearly 1.1 billion children are exposed to multiple climate hazards, with implications for their health, education, and survival. The report indicates that almost every child globally, including those in wealthier nations, faces exposure to at least one climate-related risk, such as extreme heat, droughts, and flooding. This growing exposure is especially pronounced in regions vulnerable to significant environmental changes.
The report emphasizes that the overlapping nature of these climate threats puts children in increasingly precarious situations. For instance, approximately 1.8 billion children are at risk from droughts, while around 1.2 billion face dangers associated with extreme heat. With the effects of climate change intensifying, the situation for children, particularly in poorer areas, is becoming more dire as adverse conditions escalate in frequency and intensity.
