On June 30, 2026, thousands of people marched in cities across South Africa, including Durban, to demand that undocumented foreign nationals leave the country. The protests followed a weeks-long campaign that had reportedly led to thousands fleeing and claimed four lives. Around 20 organizations called for the demonstrations, urging South Africa to tighten its immigration policy.
Police were present in force during the nationwide protests. While the day was largely peaceful, some demonstrations reportedly turned violent. South African police announced that over 900 people were arrested on July 1st in connection with the demonstrations, mostly for attempted looting.
