The Panathenaic Stadium, also known as Kallimarmaro, has begun its first major renovation since it hosted the inaugural modern Olympic Games in 1896. The project is being entirely funded by Evengelos Marinakis, a prominent Greek businessman and owner of Capital Maritime & Trading Corp. This renovation will include not only enhancements to the track surface but also improvements to the marble and lighting of the historic venue.
The upgrade initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the Hellenic Olympic Committee (EOC), which aims to preserve the stadium’s historical significance while enhancing its facilities. This marks the first comprehensive maintenance and upgrade project for the stadium, reflecting a commitment to maintaining this iconic monument of Greek sports and Olympic history. The renovation works have officially commenced, with construction equipment already on-site.
