Recent data from the Central Bank of Cyprus indicates a significant shift in the loan landscape of the country. In the first quarter of 2026, loans managed outside the traditional banking system increased by €256 million, bringing the total to €19.6 billion. This growth was largely attributed to rising household and business loan balances, suggesting a change in borrowing patterns among Cypriots.
Additionally, a concerning trend has emerged regarding the classification of loans. Reports indicate that non-performing loans, often referred to as "red loans," have increased, while "green loans," which are performing and meet repayment criteria, have seen a decline. This change has raised alarms about the financial health of borrowers, amid ongoing economic pressures, including rising costs of living.
