Starting August 31, 2026, consumers in Greece will see reductions of at least 5% on prices for 12 essential categories of products in supermarkets, as part of a voluntary initiative announced by the Ministry of Development. This measure aims to alleviate household financial burdens amid ongoing inflationary pressures. The price cuts are set to last for two to four months, with participating retailers expected to indicate eligible products with special signage.
The categories affected include fresh meats such as beef, pork, and poultry; dairy products like milk, yogurt, cheese, and eggs; as well as staples like bread, pasta, rice, and legumes. Additionally, cooking oils, cleaning products, personal hygiene items, chocolates, beverages, and school supplies will also be included in the price reduction plan. This initiative follows recent discussions among various stakeholders in the industry, including suppliers and supermarket representatives, led by Minister of Development, Takis Theodorikakos.
Despite these planned reductions, concerns remain regarding potential inflationary trends, particularly due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which could influence future pricing strategies in the market.
