Sony has announced that starting January 2028, it will cease the production of physical disc copies of PlayStation games. This decision is part of the company's strategy to align with the growing consumer preference for digital downloads over physical media. The announcement was made through an official blog post, highlighting that while new games will no longer be available on discs, they will still be sold in shops but will include only digital codes.
The shift towards an all-digital model reflects wider trends in the gaming industry, as evidenced by the digital-only release of major titles like Grand Theft Auto VI. Sony's move has garnered mixed reactions, particularly among collectors and fans who appreciate physical copies. Despite the change, the company aims to maintain availability of games through traditional retail channels, albeit in a modified format.
