A new permanent seismological station has been established on the island of Nisyros to enhance monitoring of its active volcano. The initiative is a collaboration between the municipality of Nisyros and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The seismological station, designated as HA.EMPO, has been installed in the old primary school of Emporios, which also houses the Volcano Observatory.
The municipality emphasized the importance of continuous observation, stating that the volcano of Nisyros is one of the most active volcanic centers in the Aegean Sea. The data collected by the new station will be made available in real-time to the scientific community, allowing for better understanding and management of volcanic activities on the island.
