According to Eurostat data released on July 21, 2026, Greece has achieved the largest reduction in public debt among European Union member states. Over the past year, the country's public debt decreased by 9.4 percentage points, marking a significant decline of nearly 70 percentage points compared to the peak levels recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This performance places Greece at the forefront of both the European Union and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in terms of debt reduction rates. The improvement has been noted as part of a broader recovery trajectory, symbolizing Greece's progress in managing its fiscal challenges more effectively than its counterparts within the EU.
