The European Commission has imposed a record fine of €550 million on the Chinese e-commerce platform AliExpress, a subsidiary of Alibaba, for failing to effectively monitor and remove illegal and harmful products from its site. The penalty, announced on July 21, 2026, is the largest ever issued under the Digital Services Act (DSA), which aims to enhance safety and accountability in online marketplaces.
The Commission found significant shortcomings in AliExpress's risk assessment and mitigation processes, particularly concerning the sale of counterfeit items, unsafe toys, and other harmful products. Following the ruling, AliExpress has expressed shock at the decision and is required to submit a comprehensive compliance plan by October 20, 2026, to address the deficiencies identified by the EU.
This action forms part of broader efforts by European regulators to hold major online platforms accountable for the safety of products sold on their sites and to enforce stricter compliance with digital service regulations.
