The Cypriot government, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has condemned a newly signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots regarding the construction of an undersea natural gas pipeline. The ministry characterized the MoU as illegal and asserted that it constitutes a violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus.
The ministry's announcement emphasized that this agreement represents another manifestation of Turkey's revisionist policy in the Eastern Mediterranean. It was stated that the proposed pipeline is intended to connect Turkey with the occupied areas of Cyprus, which has been a point of contention given the ongoing geopolitical disputes in the region. Cyprus plans to raise this issue at the upcoming EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, underscoring its commitment to addressing perceived violations of its territorial integrity.
