A recent report from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) highlights a concerning rise in the cost of healthy diets globally. According to the report, approximately 2.69 billion people, or one in three, are unable to afford a nutritious diet. While global hunger decreased for the third consecutive year in 2025, the rising prices of fruits, vegetables, and dairy remain a significant barrier to healthy eating for many.
The report attributes some of these rising costs to European Union farming subsidies that favor meat and grain production, inadvertently making fruits and vegetables pricier. In Greece, for example, a family of four is estimated to spend around €450 per month to maintain a healthy diet. The FAO has called for urgent action to address these financial challenges and make nutritious food more accessible to populations at risk of food insecurity.
