The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) is calling for mandatory hydration breaks for all workers across the European Union, citing the cooling breaks implemented during the recent World Cup as a model. These breaks, introduced for the first time this year, were designed to allow players to rest and hydrate after every 22 minutes of play, following advocacy from global players’ unions and health professionals.
The push for such workplace measures reflects growing concerns over heat exposure and the need for employee safety, particularly in high-temperature environments. Unions argue that similar regulations should extend beyond sports, emphasizing that hydration breaks are essential for maintaining worker health and productivity during extreme weather conditions. The ETUC has urged the European Commission to implement these recommendations on a wider scale, aiming to ensure the protection of workers in various sectors.
