Andreas Panagiotopoulos, a member of parliament from Achaia, has announced his departure from the parliamentary group of the left-wing SYRIZA party and will sit as an independent in the Greek Parliament. His decision was communicated through a letter addressed to the President of the Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis. With Panagiotopoulos's exit, SYRIZA's parliamentary group now comprises 22 members.
This announcement is part of a broader trend of departures from SYRIZA, which has faced internal divisions recently. Another lawmaker, Harry Mamoulakis from Heraklion, also declared his departure from the party around the same time, further signifying the ongoing challenges within the party’s ranks. Panagiotopoulos has opted to maintain his parliamentary seat as an independent after his resignation from the party.
