This scroll, which has mostly been considered lost for nearly two millennia, contains previously unknown works by the ancient Greek philosopher Philodemus of Gadara. The text addresses themes of Stoic philosophy, particularly ethics, art, and human behavior.
The process of deciphering the scroll involved advanced imaging techniques combined with AI algorithms, allowing scholars to "unroll" the scroll virtually without physically damaging it. This achievement has been characterized by experts as a technological marvel and is considered one of the most important developments in the study of ancient philosophy in recent decades. The scrolls had been housed in the Villa of the Papyri, which was known to contain a wealth of philosophical texts before it was destroyed in the volcanic eruption. The AI technology employed has opened new avenues for researching and understanding ancient writings that were previously inaccessible.
