A recent survey conducted by the National Betting Authority (EAS) indicates that approximately 93% of young people in Cyprus, specifically those aged 18 to 35, are exposed to gambling-related content on social media platforms. Instagram emerged as the primary channel for this exposure, highlighting the platform's significant role in promoting and normalizing gambling among youth.
The findings reveal that a majority of young Cypriots not only encounter such content but that a notable portion of them has engaged in gambling activities. Reports state that about 63% of respondents have participated in gambling in the past year, spending an average of €34 monthly. This alarming trend raises concerns about the potential impact of social media on younger demographics and their attitudes towards gambling.
The research underscores the almost ubiquitous presence of gambling content in the digital environment of young people in Cyprus, prompting discussions about regulatory measures and the responsibilities of influencers and social media platforms in relation to this issue.
