In the first five months of 2026, Greece's organized food retail sector experienced a significant growth of 6.4% in sales of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) compared to the same period in the previous year. This growth trend appears resilient despite a competitive pricing environment, which has seen consumers prioritizing essential goods over discretionary spending.
According to data from Circana, the increase in sales was particularly notable in non-alcoholic beverages, which saw a price rise of 5.4%, and snack foods, which experienced a 3.8% increase. The sustained momentum in supermarket sales reflects shifting consumer behaviors, as households become more selective in their purchasing decisions, often opting for essentials rather than eating out or purchasing non-essential items. The combined impact of these factors indicates a robust performance within the Greek supermarket sector.
