Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced that presidential elections will take place in early 2027. This declaration was made official through a decree published by the Palestinian news agency Wafa. Abbas, who has been in office since 2005, did not specify whether he would run for re-election. Alongside the presidential elections, parliamentary elections are scheduled for November 2026.
Abbas, now 90 years old, has faced criticism over his extended leadership and previous cancellations of elections he had previously announced. The upcoming elections represent a significant moment for the Palestinian Authority, which has experienced internal divisions and political stagnation in recent years. Despite the announcement, concerns remain about the political situation and the ability to hold elections in a stable environment.
