A significant fire broke out in a lumber yard and warehouse in the area of Agios Ioannis Chostou in Heraklion, Crete, on the afternoon of June 25, 2026. The fire quickly spread to nearby residences, causing extensive damage to balconies and facades of neighboring buildings, as well as destroying two warehouses entirely. The local fire brigade launched a massive firefighting operation, deploying around 95 firefighters supported by 18 fire trucks and aerial assistance from helicopters.
Residents received an emergency alert via the 112 system due to thick smoke engulfing the area, which was visible from a considerable distance. Although the situation was critical at its peak, reports indicated that the fire was eventually brought under control in the evening, significantly improving the condition. The local authorities and firefighting teams worked diligently to prevent the further spread of flames, and there were no reports of injuries or trapped individuals in the affected areas.
