The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) has reported a deterioration in the country's international investment position and a significant rise in external debt during the first quarter of 2026. The external debt increased by €1.5 billion, contributing to a widening current account deficit. According to the preliminary external sector data released, the current account deficit grew by €263 million in the same period.
The findings indicate a worsening in the balance of payments as well, as the statistics reflect deepening imbalances within the economy. These trends suggest ongoing challenges for Cyprus in managing its external obligations and maintaining economic stability. The latest numbers affirm a continued shift in the financial landscape of the country, emphasizing the need for monitoring and potential intervention to address these imbalances.
