In the first quarter of 2026, Cyprus recorded a current account deficit of €1.3 billion, according to data released by Eurostat. This marks a widening of the deficit compared to previous periods, coinciding with a stronger overall external balance reported for the European Union during the same timeframe.
Despite the overall deficit, Cyprus's services account showed a surplus of €1.2 billion. This disparity highlights the challenges faced by the economy, as the current account deficit reflects the difference between the value of imports and exports, along with income flows. Eurostat noted that the figures are not seasonally adjusted, and this ongoing trend raises concerns about Cyprus's economic stability.
